Tegucigalpa is the capital of the Central American country of Honduras and of Francisco Morazán. With more than 1,500,000 inhabitants (2006), it is the largest city in the country, at a height of almost 1,000 meters. The city is in the middle mountains and is surrounded by coniferous forests. The city has a tropical climate with a dry time from December to April.
Understand
Tegucigalpa was founded on 29 September 1578 under the name Real Villa de San Miguel de Tegucigalpa de Heredia, where there was a Lenca settlement called Teguz-galpa. Because the hills in the region were rich in gold and silver, it is often assumed that the name Teguz-galpa means "Silver Heuvich," but there are other explanations for its name.
Only after independence in 1838 did Tegucigalpa play a role in Honduras's administration. The administrative center was alternately located in Tegucigalpa and Comayagua. In 1880 the administrative center was permanently located in Tegucigalpa.

Buses run on fixed routes, where they pick up passengers at fixed bus stops at indefinite times, but not marked with a stop sign or other mark. A bus trip is subject to a fixed price throughout the city, regardless of the length of the journey. Anyone switching to another bus has to pay again. Counterucigalpa has no tram or metro.

The University of Honduras (National Autonomous University of Honduras) was founded in 1847 under the name La Sociedad del Genio Emprendedor y del Buen Gusto (The Association of Entrepreneurship and Good Taste). The first rector was the priest José Trinidad Reyes. Today, this university also has departments in San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba. The total number of students is around 30,000.
The city also has two private universities, the Universidad José Cecilio del Valle, which was founded in 1978, and the Universidad Tecnológica Centroamericana, which was founded in 1984. These universities are generally not yet seen as serious alternatives to the National Autonomous University of Honduras.
Work
Tegucigalpa plays an important role in the country's economy. The city's industry is different from that of other major industrial centers in Honduras, which is based not on banana exports but on textile, sugar and tobacco production. In addition, the economic importance of ICT is increasing.

Communication
Security
Tegucigalpa has become notorious for the many youth gangs (Maras). Many street children in Tegucigalpa often have no choice but to join a Mara in order to be protected by their Mara from members of other Maras. The gangs deal with crime, such as drug trafficking, theft and human trafficking. The gangs are fighting each other by force. Because of the murderous mutual settlements and the victims among civilians who were affected, the Honduras Government decided to take tough action against the Maras. The police in Tegucigalpa are cracking down on gangs, sometimes leading to a street war. People may see the bodies of killed gang members in the morning, but it is not always clear whether they were killed by a rival gang or by the police.
